Photoshop - Photo Border

February 03, 2007

A nice white or coloured border around a photo can often add a whole new dimension to the image. Much like a matte provides when you mount a picture in a frame, the photo border provides a constrast for your eyes to add depth to the image.

The effect is very eay to acheive using most photo editing applications. Here I provide a tutorial to achieve the effect using Photoshop CS2.

Here is the image that I am starting with:

Here are the steps to follow:

  1. Duplicate the background layer
  2. Increase the Canvas size by a propotion that you find appropriate. I usually increase by 15%-20%, and I proportion this value against the dimension of the image. This example uses 15% width and 20% height increase
  3. Ensure you select the white background as the new canvas colour.
  4. Now adjust the Layer Style of the duplicate layer so that it has black Outer Glow, with Normal blend mode, Spread of 1 and Size of 10. These figures can be adjust for personal taste
  5. Also apply the Stroke effect, with a black colour, Size of 1, and Position of Inside
  6. Add any appropriate copyright notice in a new text layer

And here is what you can expect to see at the end:

If you want to bring out the most in your image you can check out the 'Burnt Edges' tutorial with a resulting image like this one:

I use Photoshop CS2 for editing.
